GUALALA CALIFORNIA: Over the July 4th weekend (July 6-8) Gualala is traveling back in time to the American Revolution.  The Gualala Festivals Committee has invited a pre-eminent group of Revolutionary Period re-enactors from Southern California; the Foundation for Early America.  The re-enactors are the same people that have appeared in movies, television and historical demonstrations such as The Patriot, the History Channel and the Reagan Library.

Re-enactors in full regalia will move into Gualala on the Mendocino Coast over the holiday weekend to establish an encampment behind the Gualala Hotel.  The encampment itself will be a living history demonstration of 18th century life.

On Friday July 6th Paul Revere starts off the celebration with a signal light on the Cypress Clock tower at the pinnacle of town and then begins his famous ride through Gualala announcing the eminent arrival of King George’s troops.  Fireworks in Gualala are scheduled at 9:15 PM.

On July 7th and 8th many of the town luminaries will be declared “seditionists and traitors to King George”. Included in this group is the notorious Sheriff of Mendocino County Tom Allman and the dastardly California Highway Patrol Area Commander Capt Ray Madrigal.  The Sheriff refused to collect the Kings taxes after the king taxed his tea. The CHP Commander has refused passage of the Kings carriages on Highway One.

They will be arrested, placed in a specially built British jail on the front porch of the 103 year old Gualala Hotel.  A trial will be held by British Troops.

In order to be released the accused must post bail money that will be used for local non-profit projects. In 2005 over $5000 was raised and donated to the Gualala River Watershed Council for a series of information kiosks highlighting the Gualala River. During the celebrations the watershed kiosks will be unveiled and presented to the community.

Additional historical activities include 18th Century artillery and musket demonstrations, Skirmishes, arrests of townspeople, proclamations, crafts and fashions of the time.

The Marine Color Guard from Santa Rosa will again attend to ensure proper handling of the flags and to celebrate the holiday.

In 2005 Gualala residents were seized by British troops and detained at the Gualala Hotel.

This year’s activities include a Firearms Safety Center and Shooting Range at the old pharmacy building across the street from the Gualala Hotel.

The shooting range utilizes harmless plastic pellets and is open to adults and children (at least 10 years old) with parental supervision.  There will be Safety Classes throughout the day, Free Firearm Safety material and free gun locks provided by the Mendocino County Sheriff.  There are no entry charges for this area of the event.

The Firearms Safety Center is sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, through the authority of Tom Allman; Mendocino County Sheriff, the National Rifle Association, Cybergun S.A., and Soft Air USA, the Worlds largest manufacturers and distributors of airsoft guns and Smith & Wesson, Corp. Springfield Mass.

John S. Steele, and John Casey Steele, Father and Son- will supervise and operate the Center over the weekend. Both John and Casey are Certified Firearms Range Officers, and Safety Officers.  Casey Steele was Director of Range Safety at the largest shooting range in the United States.

In 2005 the British invaded the town of Gualala and suffered defeat at the hands of the local townspeople. Asked why the British are coming back to Gualala in 2007, Captain George Mack of the Royal Welch Fusiliers stated "Expected resistance in Gualala was indeed underestimated.  This compelled us to break off contact 2 summers ago; however, we feel that this campaign season will favor us by employing a new tactical approach to the town, giving us a significant battlefield advantage."

"Rabble beware!  Gualala shall soon be brought back in line, firmly in the hands of your rightful government, delivered from seditious mobs that scheme to disrupt the harmony of the mother country and their colonial duty to it.  This shouldn't take long."

Tickets for the historical encampment and trial areas at the Gualala Hotel are $10 per day for Adults, $5 per day for Students and $9 per day for seniors.  Active Military in uniform are free!  Advance ticket sales are available at the Gualala Patriot Day’s website.

Gualala is the Southern gateway to Mendocino County.  It is Located on Highway One, 37 miles north of Jenner and the Russian River.  It is adjacent to The Sea Ranch in Sonoma County.
