Welcome Home!
May 19th, 2005

When the owners and staff of the Sandpiper Restaurant decided to host a home coming party for returning Marine Jeff Merbs, they wanted it done right. Raymond purchased and hung red, white and blue buntings and ribbons around the Sandpiper restaurant. Two United States Marine Corps flags were hung amongst the decorations.

Several local businesses helped as Raymond Parker-Rhodes and his wife Laura Marks brought in one of the area’s top bands the Pollinators, The Surf Market loaned the BBQ, Leslie Bates from Coast Catering provided the tables and chairs, and Raymond and Laura erected a tent behind the restaurant in case of rain.

About 200 people attended the event, many bringing deserts, thank you cards and gifts for the 24 year old Marine. Wine and Beer flowed in celebration as the two owners offered free food to the public. The staff of the Sandpiper volunteered to cook and serve refreshments.

During the event virtually all the guests approached the local hero, introducing themselves and thanking him for his service to our country. Veterans from WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War pulled Jeff aside to speak with him privately. Jeff said “It’s hard to discuss my experiences with people – only other vets who have been in combat can really understand the experience I’ve been through. I want everyone to know how much I appreciate the yellow ribbons and the welcome home – I wish all my buddies could receive a welcome home like this!”

Jeff has three medals for his service and while Jeff leaves for retraining in a month he is coming home again over the July 4th weekend to be the Guest of Honor at Gualala Patriot Days.
